Amritsar:
The Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate has seized four German-made
revolvers from the 'Samjauta Express' - the train link between Indian
and Pakistan. "The information was given by the Intelligence Bureau and
the Border Security Force. As a result of the joint search operation,
we recovered four revolvers of German make. They were hidden under the
bogie near the battery box in a special cavity made for them. On recovery,
these weapons were seized under the Custom Act," said D.P. Singh, Commissioner
of Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate. The pistols are reportedly worth
around 500,000 rupees in the international market, Singh added. The Samjhauta
Express was started on October 29, 1954. It is a bi-weekly train that
runs between India and Pakistan. Until the reopening of the Thar Express,
this was the only rail connection between the two countries. The train
service was set up with an agreement between Indian and Pakistan Railways
to alternately use an Indian and a Pakistani rake and locomotives for
the train. In 2002, tensions between the two countries resulted in the
train service being suspended. The service resumed on January 15, 2004
after the signing of a 'People to People Contact' agreement. The second
train link between the two countries, -- the 'Thar Express' -- runs between
Khokhrapar in Pakistan's Sindh province and Munabao in Rajasthan.
