Army men climb Cho Oyu New
Delhi: Twelve members of the Indian Army Mountaineering Expedition
made history on May 23, by summiting Mt Cho Oyu (8201m), the sixth highest
mountain of the world. Cho Oyu stands 20 Kms to the West of Everest on
the border of China and Nepal. Cho Oyu was first climbed in 1954 by an
Austrian team. First Indian Expedition to Mt Cho Oyu was launched in 1958.
During the expedition two Sherpas of Nepalese Orgin had scaled the peak.
Since then no other Indian team has attempted the peak, therefore this
ascent of the mountain by the Indian Army Expedition makes it the first
true Indian ascent in the real sense. The twelve summiteers, led by Lt
Col Anand Swaroop, along with Sub Palden Giachho,Hav Both Singh, Sherpas
Chhering Dorje, Domme, Phurba Namgyal, Phurba Chhetar, Dawa Sherpa and
the team photographer, Gerry have descended the mountain safely. Another
summit attempt by rest of the 7 team members is planned for 26 May 06.
With the ascent of Mt Cho Oyu, Indian Army soldiers have scaled five of
the fourteen, peaks in the world that are in eight thousand category.
The expedition was flagged off from New Delhi on April 12 by the Chief
of Army Staff, General JJ Singh who is himself a qualified mountaineer
and keen adventure sports lover. |
