400 Mumbai trains suspended for rail work

Mumbai: Thousands of daily commuters were left stranded on Saturday following a stoppage of over 400 trains due to ongoing construction work on the Borivali-Virar surburban railway line. Trains plying between Churchgate and Virar have been cancelled for the next four days due to the signal and track work, said the Western Railway sources. The Western Railway sources said that they had tied up with Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) for introduction of extra buses along the route to provide an alternate option of commuter transport. The work on the railway tracks and platforms started at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and would be completed by 4:40 a.m. on Monday (May 22). Despite it being Saturday, when most of the government offices are closed, there were a good number of people standing in queue to board trains this morning. Proper arrangements were made so that people did not jostle to board the trains. An official from the Railway Protection Force at Dadar railway station said that they thought they would have to patrol the platforms to contain the crowds as people had offices, but nothing of the sort had to be done as commuters maintained calm and cooperated. The stations affected by the mega block are those between Goregaon and Borivli, since only 146 of 1,030 trains will ply between these stations today.
