'Eco-friendly' Amarnath Yatra from June 11 Pahalgam:
This year's Amarnath Yatra, which starts on June 11, would not only
be more environment-friendly, but also provide new amenities to the pilgrims.
From hot water supply to insulated pre-fabricated huts, pilgrims this
year will experience a whole new set of eco-friendly amenities, as they
trek up the mighty Himalayan passes en-route to the holy shrine. Officials
of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) have said that in an attempt
to preserve the ecology of the region, they have constructed hundreds
of pre-fabricated huts and toilets at Nunwan Base Camp, Sheshnag and Panjtarni.
The new toilets have been constructed in a manner that would dispose off
the effluents in leach pits, where micro-organisms would process it to
manure. While announcing the date for the pilgrimage simultaneously from
Baltal and Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S K Sinha,
expressed happiness over the necessary steps being taken by the organisers
to stop the pollution of the Lider River. Gen. Sinha had earlier inspected
arrangements made by the shrine Board, he himself being the Chairman of
the shrine Board. He was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer, SASB,
Dr. Arun Kumar and Deputy Commissioner, Islamabad, Baseer Khan. Gen. Sinha
also praised the local populace for showering their warmth and hospitality
on the pilgrims whose number has swelled to over four lakhs from mere
one lakh the previous years. |
