Agra faces acute water shortage Agra:
With soaring temperature and power crisis already making life difficult,
villagers in Agra are now facing acute water shortage as ground water
level has gone below normal. Villagers have to spend hours these days
while fetching trickling water from tankers, which come at high prices,
around four rupees per bucket. Moreover, according to villager, the water
is not sufficient for drinking purposes with heat wave adding to the woes.
However, officials and some locals term the water shortage in Agra as
a regular problem in summers despite being situated on the banks of river
Yamuna. Nevertheless, to fight the problem, locals have installed manual
water pumps, as, according to them, the authorities have failed to address
the issue. "There is a major water crisis here. Women really get tired
of filling buckets (from tankers). The authorities are sitting tight with
no one really coming out to help us," said Manohar, a local. Officials
also acknowledge the crisis but fail to come out with a solution. "It
is a drought prone area and because the water level goes down, people
do face severe water crisis. It happens almost every year. We are trying
to sort out the problem," said Sanjay Prasad, District Magistrate of Agra.
During summers, power and water shortage hit several million households
across the country, especially in the months of May and June, until the
monsoon arrives..
