Gwalior
zoo inmates beat the heat Gwalior:
Fountains and coolers for the tiger and the bear and thatched cages
for peacocks and parrots. That seems to be the norm at Gwalior zoo where
animals are looking at releif from the scorching summer. According to
Dr. S K Mittal, an official of the zoo, several pro- active measures have
been taken to keep the animals cheerful. "We have planted grass to increase
humidity. For watering of grass, we have installed sprinklers through
which mist comes with air and humidity increases. For some birds and animals
we have constructed dry nests to reduce the sun effect and maintain low
temperature so that the animals remain cool and comfortable. For some
sensitive animals like tiger, lion and panthers, we have installed coolers
to maintain temperature and humidity," said Dr. Mittal. Bathing and cooling
facilities aside, animals are beating the heat with more ease enjoying
ice creams offered by the visitors too. Animals are also provided with
cold drinking water at regular intervals. The summer is blazing down in
full fury, with the north and the east of the country, which is in the
grip of a severe heat wave. The month of May, which normally signals the
onset of severe heat wave conditions across north India, appears to be
unforgiving this year as well. Temperatures in many areas are hovering
between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius. Increased humidity, dust haze and hot
winds added to woes of the people reeling under an oppressive heat wave
in most regions.
