Porters' protest at Wagah Border
by Ravinder Singh Robin

Wagah Border: Activists of Border Porters Union today registered their protest at the Wagah Border against the thrashing of one of their colleague, Sukhwinder Singh by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. Hundreds of porters gathered outside the custom gate of the Wagah joint check post on Sunday. Holding placard in their hands, they shouted slogan against the BSF. The porters have been on strike since May 3, which has also affected the trading across the border. They have also demanded action against the BSF personnel who thrashed the Sukhwinder and have also demanded for compensation. While denying allegations of thrashing the porter, Pardeep Katyal, a BSF official said that the personnel had caught Sukhwinder red handed stealing dry fruit from boxes, which were imported from Pakistan by the traders. Sukhwinder had a history of suffering epilepsy attack. However, the BSF was looking into the matter. Over 1000 porters have been working at Wagah joint check post and special license for working at Wagah has been given by the custom.
