Tourism Ministry classifies hotel projects New
Delhi: In an effort to ensure requisite standards of hotels in the
country, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has classified hotel projects
in different categories and has formulated guidelines for this purpose.
The Ministry has categorised hotels in six classes, from one to five-star
deluxe, and has set up a committee to review the classification after
every five years. The committee has representatives from the Ministry
of Tourism, State Governments, Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations
of India, Hotel Association of India, Indian Tour Operators Association
of India, Travel Agents Association of India and the Institute of Hotel
management and Catering Technology. As per the Ministry's classification
of hotels, there are 82 hotels that fall into the '5-Star Deluxe' category
which have18764 rooms altogether. In '5-Star' category, there are 92 hotels
across the country with 11332 rooms. The Ministry has put 83 hotels in
the 'Heritage' category, while 50 hotels are yet to be classified. In
order to speed up the work of classification or re- classification of
functioning hotels, in one to three star categories, five Regional Committees
have also been set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati and Chennai
to conduct inspection of hotels of one to three star categories. |
