Goans threatened by industrial toxic emissions

Belasao (Goa): Industrial toxic emissions are posing a major threat to Goans. Zuari Industries Limited, is one such factory that is posing an ecological threat. Located about 25 km from Panjim on the Panjim-Vasco route, this compnay has been under the scanner of officials of the pollution department. Villagers in Belasao have complained that toxins released from the factories flow into the sea, which results in the death of marine life. "I do not think that any action has been taken against it. It depends whom they catch. But we have to face this everyday. Once in a month, the fish dies because of pollution," complained Gois, a resident. "They have passed a pipeline through the sea. Even that affects the fishermen and when they cast their nets, they get up struck with the pipeline. If we go to them with complaints, they do not give us anything, not even compensation for any loss of the nets," said Caji Rodrigues, another resident. The State Pollution Control Board denies that there is any pollution now. They say that they have been attending to complaints of arsenic leakage regularly. There is no arsenic coming and going into the stream. There is no pollution in my opinion," said Dr. L.U. Joshi, the Chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
