Devotees prepare for holy mace procession Srinagar:
Pilgrims visiting the Amarnath cave shrine have started preparations
for carrying the holy mace of Lord Shiva. A number of priests attended
the sanctification of maces to be carried by the devotees as part of the
"Chari Mubarak" procession. Mahant Deependra Giri, the head priest of
the Amarnath shrine, who is also the custodian of the holy maces, said
that the procession would leave on August 4. "We perform rituals with
the mace on the auspicious day of Nag Panchami before we take out the
maces in a procession. Though, earlier we used to leave with the procession
after the ritual was completed, now as the situation in the valley is
not conducive we will leave on August 4," Mahant Giri said. The annual
pilgrimage that started in June will come to an end on the full moon day
of August, when the main rituals will be held inside the Amarnath cave.
The annual pilgrimage began on June 11 this year, will go up to August
9.
