Goa Carnival begins today Panaji: A three-day carnival in Goa will begin from today, with float parades planned in important cities of the state, including Panaji. The float parades are organised in association with the State Tourism Department. The float parade in Panaji will be led by a special float hosting 'King Momo', a specially decorated float, which will declare the decree of "eat, drink and merry". The carnival is being sponsored by a major telecom industry, 'Reliance Infocomm'. "This is the second year that we are sponsoring the carnival parade aiming to keep up the rich tradition of carnival in this state," CEO (Maharashtra, Goa, Mumbai), Reliance Infocomm Atul Jhamb said. According
to the Tourism Department, this year more than 50 floats are expected
to participate in the parade. "We expect thousands of tourists to witness
the parade and last year 40,000 tourists had specially come down to Goa
for the celebrations", Tourism Department official said. This year too,
more emphasis is given on the traditional floats to retain the identity
of the carnival. The organisers are not in favour of the participation
of commercial floats. Last year, the Panaji Traditional Festival and Carnival
Committee had tried to bring back the traditional carnival flavour and
partly succeeded in bringing the traditional floats. Conventional khell-tiatres
and other programmes were organised during the carnival festivities.
