Chennai's Guindy Park - a spot for family picnic

     Chennai: Be it black bucks, spotted deer, jackals, monkeys, hyena, sambar or Australian flightless birds, for the hundreds of visitors to the Chennai-based Guindy National Park, they provide a visual delight. Come summer and the park is flooded with families who throng to watch a vast number of animals and birds that are not usually found in most of the parks in the country. For visitors that include a huge number of tourists from across the country and abroad, the Guindy National Park remains to be one of the prime attractions in Chennai, especially during vacations.

   Guindy National Park is recommended as a picnic spot for the entire family. It renders an opportunity for one and all to spend the day-time amidst the natural habitat and return when its late in the evening but with a feeling of immeasurable joy. "This is one of the favourite destinations for the tourists coming here. One will find variety of trees and animals here. We organise Eco-clubs for the school children to educate them about various animals, plants and conservation of national park like this," said Ashish Srivastava, Wild life Warden, Guindy National Park. A home to peacock, flightless bird common pea owl brown owl, EMU, an Australian origin which is the second largest flightless bird and many other types of wild animals besides black bucks, spotted deers, jackals, monkeys, hyena, sambar to name a few. "I have come to India with my wife here. This is an interesting place to visit. Its really nice," said Mersch, a tourist from Luxembourg.

    One can have the rare view of deer jumping and running in the forest. Today the park has become a natural habitat for many animals. "I have come here with my sister and daughter. We have seen crocodile, hyena and other animals. I am enjoying here," said Vanitha Cannon, a tourist. This park boasts of over 24 varieties of trees. Amona Squamosa, Atlanta Monoplylla, Feronia Limonia, Azadirachta India are some of them. Also more than 14 varieties of shrubs, over 14 types of mammals like elephant, antilope, spotted dear, jungle cat, toddy cat and Indian civet. The park accounts for over 37 varieties of birds, like black chested, black winged kite, honey buzzard, pariah kite, and so on. There are also many kinds of amphibians and snakes to add to the variety that is already available. Visited by over three lakh visitors during a season and having a snake park and a Children's park as its main attractions, surely, it is a place no parents or children would like to skip visiting!
