Clinton visits Goa Panaji:
Former United States President, Bill Clinton has arrived in Goa on
a day-long visit. Clinton is in Goa to oversee his Clinton Foundation
HIV/AIDS initiative, which is a partner with the Indian government's National
AIDS Control Organization (NACO). Clinton visited the Cipla Pharmaceuticals
Plant at Verna in South Goa today, with whom the foundation has brokered
deal for the supply of a second line of antiretroviral treatment. The
Clinton Foundation has an active program in India, where they have been
working since September 2004. The Clinton Foundation is currently working
with NACO to scale up its free ART system and achieve its long-term treatment
objectives. The Foundation has also successfully negotiated down the price
of AIDS drugs and diagnostic reagents with Indian companies. These low
prices allow the Clinton Foundation to bring lifesaving treatment to many
people in the developing world at affordable prices. Recently, the Bangalore-based
Strides Arcolab Ltd has entered into an agreement with the Clinton Foundation
to make available a range of affordable anti-retroviral drugs for the
treatment of HIV/AIDS in countries that are under the aegis of the Clinton
Foundation HIV/AIDS initiative. Strides Arcolab will offer the ARV efavirenz
for $240 per patient per year. This price represents savings of more than
30 per cent from current market rates. Following the agreement, Strides
will also supply first-line ARVs under Clinton Foundation agreements Clinton
will leave Goa this evening to attend the marriage of hotelier Vikram
Chatwal in Delhi. |
