PM seeks review of charges levied on foreigners New
Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked his Cabinet colleagues
to work towards a system that is not discriminatory in providing services
in the country to foreign passport holders and NRIs. Dr. Singh asked the
Cabinet Secretary to review, with the concerned Ministries, the discriminatory
charges being levied for services to foreign passport holders including
NRIs. The Prime Minister suggested that the concerned Ministries should
examine the feasibility of ending this anomaly and treating all consumers
of such services on par irrespective of nationality. Higher charges are
levied on foreign passport holders in the case of hotel tariffs, as entrance
fee to historic monuments and tourist sites, for domestic airfare, registration
fees for international or other conferences or seminars, charges for booking
space for trade and other exhibitions organized by the ITPO and other
organizations, subscription rates for journals or magazines excluding
additional postage charges, and healthcare. |
