Plastic bags below 50 microns banned in Maharashtra Mumbai:
The Government of Maharashtra has imposed a ban on plastic bags below
50 microns. The decision was taken in order to avoid any possibility of
floods due to plastic bags. Plastic carry bags became one of the reasons
for flood when rain lashed Mumbai in July 2005. "Recently the flood situation
we faced in Mumbai city, one of the reasons was Plastics. Carry bag is
not easy to clean the nallah (canal) and there is some industrial plastic
that is also creating lot of nonsense while we are desalting the nallahs.
That's why Maharashtra government has decided that below 50 microns carry
bags must be banned in the state," said Dilip Patel, Deputy Mayor, Mumbai.
Commissioner of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Johny Joseph said that a
special squad will be constituted to deal with pollution caused by plastics
and also keep a check that the ban is being followed properly. "Most of
these bags are manufactured at certain places in the state.BMC earlier
with the law of less than 20 microns plastics prohibited we under took
a drive. Now with the new limits the BMC through its special squad will
undertake raids on all these manufacturing units which are working in
unauthorised manner and that way a check can be kept. It is a welcome
decision from the government," said Johny Joseph,Commissioner of Mumbai
Municipal Corporation. Whoever caught violating with the rule will be
penalised with a fine of 5,000 rupees for the first time and if the offence
is repeated second time the fine will be doubled. But third time the person
has to pay 25,000 rupees or three months in jail or both.
