Heroin seized at Chennai airport Chennai:
Air Intelligence Unit sleuths at the Chennai International Airport
have seized 400 grams of narcotics worth Rs.40 lakh. Officials while keeping
a tab on the passengers became suspicious of Ponnusamy Lakshmanan. On
being interrogated, Lakshmanan said he was going to Male to sell slippers.
Sleuths recovered slippers worth rupees 15,000 from Lakshmanan. On being
grilled for some time, Lakshmanan admitted that he had concealed some
capsules of heroin on his person. "Our suspicion was that the value of
these slippers will be around rupees 15,000 only which will not be covering
the cost of the ticket. So, again our officers questioned him and sustained
questioning revealed he had kept concealed some capsules inside his body.
After sometime, he admitted that he had consumed these capsules which
contain narcotics drug," said U Niranjan, Joint Commissioner, Air Intelligence
Unit, Customs, Chennai Airport. The sleuths have recovered 99 capsules
so far, and said that Lakshmanan had made six to seven trips to Male in
the past. The capsules recovered were wrapped in pink polythene. These
were further found covered with several layers of blue adhesive tape,
which when cut open was found to contain sandy brown powdery substance.
Thirty-five-year-old Lakshmanan hails from a village in Tamil Nadu and
has been arrested under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Drugs Act 1985
apart from a case being filed under the Customs Act of 1962. A passenger
bound for Male was arrested last October and 100 such capsules were recovered
from him. |
