Punjab
reels under severe cold wave
Adampur (Punjab): Punjab experienced
intense cold wave on Friday morning. Dipping temperatures and an unusually
cold weather tightened its grip on the region. Adampur, in Jalandhar district,
recorded the lowest temperature in the plains as mercury plummeted almost
four degrees below normal to settle at 1.6 degree Celsius. "In Adampur,
1.6 degree Celsius was recorded. This is primarily because of movement
of western disturbances in the northern latitudes. With passage of western
disturbances across Jammu and Kashmir region, we normally get cold, dry
continental air mass over the lower regions. This has resulted in the
fall in temperatures over this region," said D. Bhattacharya, Senior Meteorological
Officer, Air Force Station. The cold wave would persist for the next two
days, he added. Motorists and commuters had a tough time braving the cold
icy winds and a dense fog while heading towards their places of work.
"I am feeling very cold. My village is two to three kilometers from here.
I came from there and there's a lot of fog on the way. My clothes are
wet and they have become almost frozen like. Buses and other public transports
are running late. Hands have stiffened due to the cold," said Rajinder,
a local.
