Jammu-Srinagar highway blocked by landslips

Jammu: The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed on Sunday again after the traffic was opened for a day. The 300-km highway was closed due to landslides at Panthial, 150 kms from Jammu. The traffic authorities had allowed 1,000 stranded vehicles to move to their respective destinations. The highway - linking Kashmir to the rest of the country, was reopened for traffic yesterday, five days after it was closed due to landslides at between Banihal and Ramban sectors. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said the highway would be opened only after the landslides are cleared. Since Monday, about 1000 vehicles, mostly carrying goods, were stranded at different points on the route. Hundreds of passengers and vehicles stranded at several places along the highway were allowed to move towards Srinagar and Jammu on Saturday. Due to the closure of the highway, the Kashmir valley has been facing acute shortage of essential commodities. Road blockades due to winter landslides are a recurring phenomena in the Kashmir valley.
