Srinagar has season's first snowfall Srinagar: Residents here hailed the first snowfall of the season on Monday, as it generated hopes of revival of tourism after the recent setbacks due to militancy. Local businessmen hope early snowfall in the region would bring holidaymakers and winter sports enthusiasts.
"This snowfall will help increase the groundwater level thus help us and
also will boost electricity. It brings a lot of benefits. It's our luck
that this time snowfall is happening. We are happy as the region will
have a good ambience that will make the tourists happy too," said Ghulam
Nabi, a resident of Srinagar. The snowfall has been widespread in the
valley, especially in north Kashmir's Baramulla, Kupwara and Pahalgam
and Anantnag in the south. "Srinagar experienced first snow fall today.
We are feeling really good. Climate is really good and everyone has come
out in the streets with their jackets and pullovers on," said Altaf Ahmed,
another resident. For decades, Srinagar had been the main tourist attraction
and source of livelihood for region's tourism dependent economy. Despite
setbacks to tourism from insurgency, Kashmir still continues to be a premium
destination for foreign and domestic visitors.
