'Uttaranchal' changes name to 'Uttarakhand' New
Delhi: Uttaranchal is all set to get a new name as "Uttarakhand" as
the Union Cabinet today gave its approval to accept the request of the
State Government to change the name of the State. At a Cabinet meeting
here, the government gave its nod to undertake legislation to alter the
name of the State of "Uttaranchal" to "Uttarakhand" under Article 3 of
the Constitution of India. A Bill, namely, the Uttaranchal (Alternation
of Name) Bill, 2006 will be submitted to President APJ Abdul Kalam for
referring it to the State Legislature of Uttaranchal for expressing its
views. The Bill will be introduced in Parliament after requirements of
the proviso to Article 3 of the Constitution have been complied with.
The proposed legislation to alter the name will fulfil the aspirations
of the local people, government said.
