Asom in grip of heat wave as rest Guwahati
(Asom): Assam is experiencing unprecedented heat when most of the
country is reeling under floods. In Guwahati, people preferred staying
indoors due to the heat. Anup Barman, a resident said: "It is very hot
this summer. People have not been able to come out of their houses. Farmers
are having a difficult time." Most people were seen drinking cool coconut
water to beat the heat. Authorities say that the heat is abnormal, as
usually heavy rains cause flood in the state during August. Officials
have attributed a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal as the cause of the
heat wave. "If there is a depression and low pressure system in the Bay
of Bengal, at the time the normal south-easterly winds are sucked in by
the depression of the low pressure systems. It is not allowed to move
to the Northeast region. The depression also sucks in the winds from the
land, continental wind from China and Myanmar. As they travel from such
long distance they become hot and cause hot weather," Regional Metrological
Department, Deputy Director General D Chakravorty said. The temperature
has ranged 34 - 38 degree Celsius about six degrees above the normal temperature.
The Asom government has extended the summer holidays of schools and colleges.
Schools and colleges will now reopen 25 days later than usual on August
26.
