Undertaking a pilgrimage can be a soul-stirring experience. It is
a journey aimed at attaining a higher state of spirituality. The Amarnath
Yatra is already in progress, and on Friday, Mahant Deependra Giri, the
head priest of the Amarnath shrine, took out the 'Chhari Mubarak' or the
`Holy Mace', and led a procession towards the shrine via the tourist town
of Pahalgam. "Today (August 4) is Ekadashi. We will start our journey
covering Pampur, Tejphara, Margdand, Ashgam, Chandanwari, Sheshnag and
Panchtarni. The journey will end on August 9 of Purnima (full moon) with
full religious rituals. The Chhari Mubarak procession and ceremony is
undertaken to pray for peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir," said
Giri, who is the custodian of the holy mace. The pilgrimage to the shrine
began on JUne 11 and will end on August 9.
