Three-door buses to hit Bangalore roads soon

Bangalore: Women commuters in Bangalore buses are in for some good news as 'three-door buses' with separate exits for men and women will hit the city roads soon. The three-door buses, started by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), have been built after considering the views of bus commuters and other road-users, BMTC officials told The Hindu. The buses, which are specially designed for 'women', will be painted in pink and ply only in those areas where there are a large number of women commuters, the officials added. Ten buses are being operated exclusively for women by the corporation. At present, one of the buses is plying between J.P. Nagar and the Kempe Gowda Bus Station (Route No. 2). The three-door bus with a door in the centre will help women to board the buses easily. According to the officials, ticket conductors will now find it easier to monitor the entry and exit of commuters. The BMTC officials also said that women conductors would be deployed in these buses. Officials said that the doors of these buses are opened with an automatic response system and will not run until all doors are closed. The introduction of the new system warns the commuters to stand away from the doors. The announcement will be made in the bus and which in both Kannada and English language. The bus will have flexible seats for the conductors which can be folded any time and according to the convenience and space available. Instead of facility of ordinary painted boards, the Corporation has also introduced new radium stickers to display route number and destination to helps visibility at night. BMTC provides the most affordable and dependable transport service to the people in and around Bangalore. They are an undertaking of the Government of Karnataka, dedicated to the commoner's transport facility.

The BMTC is the only profit making public sector urban transport corporation in the country. It has always strived to improve the quality of service to the travelling public. Problems like pollution, easing traffic congestion, saving fuel, introducing all latest technologies in operations to save precious time and money are also under consideration. BMTC has its origin in a private company called Bangalore Transport Company Limited founded in 1940 catering to the entire city with just 98 buses. The then Government of Mysore (now Karnataka) took over the city transport from the private company by an act and ran buses up to 10-mile radius in the city in 1956 calling it Bangalore Transport Service (BTS). On August 15, 1997, BMTC was incorporated as a separate entity.
