Heavy rain lashes Tamil Nadu Chennai: Heavy rain continued to lash the Tamil Nadu capital, Chennai, and various other parts of the State for the third day on Tuesday. The rain, caused by a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, has affected the normal life here since Sunday night. Many areas in the city were flooded due to the rain, causing hardship to the office-goers. According to the local weather office, rains would continue in the next 24 hours as the depression over the Bay of Bengal was laying 200 km east southeast of Pamban in Rameshwaram district. The cautionary signal has been given in Nagapattinam, Pamban, Rameswaram and Cuddalore ports and fishermen in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry were advised to stay away from sea activity. A report from Cuddalore said people living in Devanampattinam and Thalanguda areas, which bore the impact of the December 26 tsunami, moved to safer places as high tides lashed the coast. Similar high tides were also witnessed along the Nagapattinam coast. Meanwhile, in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Sivaganga, Tiruchirapalli and Pudukottai districts, holiday has been declared in schools and colleges by the Tamil Nadu Government. Following
heavy rain, which have continued unbated for the last three days, Tamil
Nadu is facing a flood threat. The rain, caused by a depression over the
southwest Bay of Bengal, has affected the normal life in Chennai since
Sunday night. The Erode and Coimbatore District Collectors have issued
the flood warning to those who are living on the banks of the River Amaravathy.
According to official sources, the catchment area of the Amaravathi Dam
has received a record 137 mm rain in the past 36 hours. A total of 96,000
cusecs of surplus water was discharged from the dam. The water is expected
to reach Karur Wednesday evening. Chennai city, which had been receiving
intermittent rainfall, also experienced a few heavy spells today morning
causing hardship to the public. Many areas in the city were flooded, causing
hardship to the office-goers. Schools and colleges in many districts such
as Tiruchirapalli, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Karur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai,
Villuppuram, Erode, Salem and Dindigul in Tamil Nadu have been declared
closed due to the flood and rain. |
