Sasikala released from jail, but under treatment for covid in Victoria hospital
A large number of Sasikala's supporters had come from Tamil Nadu, which is going to the polls in a few months, to greet her as she was officially released from jail in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning but confined to Victoria hospital as she has contracted covid. They came to take their 'Chinnamma' home to galvanise Tamil politics.

BENGALURU, Jan 27: Former AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala Natarajan, 66, a close aide of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the chief of AIADMK the late J Jayalalithaa, who was officially released from the Central jail, Parappana Agrahara, in Bengaluru at 11 am on Wednesday, is under treatment for covid in Victoria hospital in the city. Doctors said her condition is improving.

A huge crowd of her supporters coming all the way from poll-bound Tamil Nadu lined up outside Victoria Hospital, raised slogans and distributed sweets. Sasikala was sentenced to four years' imprisonment in 2017 in a Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case in which Jayalalithaa was the prime accused. Her sister-in-law J Ilavarasi and Jayalalithaa's foster son VN Sudhakaran were also convicted in the case.

TTV Dhinakaran, Sasikala's nephew and the new Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, told reporters, "We are all happy that our beloved Chinnamma has been released."

However, Sasikala, continuing her treatment in Victoria hospital for covid, cannot come out in public for at least a week as per the Ministry protocol on covid management.

She was admitted to Bowring hospital on January 20 and shifted to Victoria hospital the next day as she tested positive for coronavirus.

Sasikala has maintained a oxygen saturation level (SPO2) of 96/97 for the past 12 hours. The blood pressure was 126/70 mmHg and blood sugar level 196 mg/dl. She was taking food orally and was able to walk, doctors said. As per the covid protocol, she can be discharged on the 10th day if she is asymptomatic and free of oxygen support for three continuous days, the hospital bulletin said.

It is unpredictable what impact she will come to bear on the volatile politics of Tamil Nadu going to the polls in a few months. Although she is not eligible to contest the elections for the next six years according to sub-section 3 of Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, as she has been convicted in corruption case and jailed for four years.
