New covid strain cases in India reach 25: Noida woman admitted to GIMS
The new infections include seven from Karnataka, four from Delhi, two from Uttar Pradesh and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Pune in Maharashtra. The UK strain has spread to several countires, the latest is China.

NEW DELHI, Dec 31: Twenty-five people who had travelled to the UK have so far tested positive for the new covid variant in India. Six samples had come positive on Tuesday, 14 on Wednesday and five on Thursday.

These UK covid strain infections include seven from Karnataka, four from Delhi, two from Uttar Pradesh and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Pune in Maharashtra.

A woman (33) from Noida Sector 50 who had returned from the UK on December 18 has been admitted to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida after testing positive for the new coronavirus mutant. Except for fever her condition was reported stable on Thursday. Earlier a two-year old girl was reportedly infected by the new strain in UP.

Of the total 25 cases, the latest five were reported on Thursday. Four of the samples were tested at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune and one at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in Delhi.

Out of the 20 positive results that came on Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 were from NCDC, Delhi, 7 from NIMHANS, Bengaluru, 2 from CCMB, Hyderabad, 1 from NIBG, Kolkata, 1 from NIV, Pune, and 1 from IGIB, Delhi. Of the six results of Tuesday, three were from Karnataka and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. They all had returned from the UK.

About 33,000 passengers from the UK had arrived at various Indian airports between November 25 and December 23. They are being tracked and are being subjected to RT-PCR tests.

The presence of the new covid variant has been reported by Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon, Singapore and now China.

China has reported the new covid has arrived there from Britain. The first patient is a 23-year-old woman from Shanghai who came from Britain on December 14, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control said.

Over 50 countries, including India, have banned flights from the UK.

The new mutant spreads 70% faster and was the cause of 60 % of deaths in the UK during December. However, it has not been confirmed whether the new strain is more lethal or not.

The BioNTech which developed the covid vaccine in partnership with Pfizer claims that with the new technology they are using it could be possible to develop a new vaccine in a couple of weeks if the vaccine currently being administered turns out to be less effective.
