CHENNAI, Dec 26: Two policemen have heen arrested for robbing a jeweller in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. The two cops alongwith eight others, who also have been arrested, robbed the jeweller, his son and a staff who were carrying the jewellery by intercepting their auto. The incident had taken place a fortnight ago but was not reported by the police.
Hundred sovereigns of ornaments and Rs 10 lakh cash were recovered from the arrested. The jeweller, Mahendran (52), used to supply gold ornaments to shops in Sriperumbudur. On the fateful day he and his son Ashish and a staff were carrying the ornaments. The robbers came on a bike and stopped them and robbed them of the bag containing the ornaments. A complaint was lodged at the Sriperumbudur police station on December 12, the next day.
Following investigations, the two policemen, Tamil and Kathir, who colluded with the robbers, were arrested. The arrested policemen were on escorting duty of taking criminals from the jails to the courts.
The police said they had circulated the photos of the jewellery to all shops in the State anticipating the robbers would try to sell them and promptly they got an alert from a receiver in Kumbakonam.
