WASHINGTON, Dec 6: The formal moniker to address the first female Vice-President's husband was chosen after much debate among the transition groups recently. Because there is no precedent! Doug Emhoff, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris's husband, will be addressed, from January 20 when the new Presidential team is inauguaretd, as the Second Gentleman, a matching gender title for the Second Lady. The matter has been settled.
That is, there have always been Second Ladies only as there was never a woman Vice-President in American history and so there existed no form of address for a husband in that position.
And even the Second Lady title came with Jennie Tuttle Hobart w/o VP Garret Hobart (1897-99) as far as records go.
The present Second Lady is Karen Pence, wife of incumbent Vice-President Michael Pence. And the First Lady (FLOTUS) is Melania Trump, the slot going to Jill Biden when Joe Biden will take the office of the President of the United States of America next month!.
But when will the US have a First Gentleman?
