31 couples enter wedlock at mass marriage in Jalandhar

Jalandhar: A non-resident Indian (NRI) solemnized the mass marriage of 31 underprivileged couples here on Wednesday. Young men and women, from poor families tied the marital knot at the ceremony. Harjindar Singh Dhanoa, an NRI from England, who helped solemnize the marriages, said that the endeavour was to help young men and women from poor families. "The villagers in Punjab often addicted to drugs are living in destitution, and have no means of livelihood. So at least these girls from impoverished families are assured of a better life," Dhanoa added. The grooms and brides expressed their gratitude for the help and support provided to them by Dhanoa. "I am very happy about this ceremony. Such gestures have never been made before," said Jagdish, a bridegroom. The newly married couples were also gifted with household items to help them get a start in life. "31 marriages were held en masse. It was a great help to poor people," said Sarabjit Singh, a bride. Brides' parents often have to pay huge sums of money as dowry to the bridegroom at the time of the marriage, which often pushes needy families into penury. Mass marriages are becoming increasingly popular.
