Recipe
book on beef dishes sparks protests in Uttar Pradesh
Kanpur/Meerut
(UP): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged
noisy protests in Kanpur and Meerut on Thursday against
a cookery book that mentions recipe of beef dishes.
BJP activists burnt copies of the book written by
Professor Umesh Saksena of Jwala Devi College, Kanpur
and raised slogans against the professor outside the
college. "The book written by Professor Saksena is
an insult of our Goddess. We will not tolerate this.
She should apologies for it and the college should
immediately suspend her. Strict action should be taken
against her otherwise we will not let her stay in
the city," said Badeji, a BJP activist. Prof. Saksena
has temporarily left her house. In Meerut, BJP activists
took to the street against publishers, even as police
raided its godown in search for copies of the controversial
book. "We have told them (publishers) to remove the
books from the market and from the shops. We have
not found any such book in their godown. He (The Publisher)
said that the book was published last year and according
to him this book is not in the syllabus this year,"
said Mukesh Mashram, District Magistrate, Meerut.
Cow slaughter is banned in most of the country except
all northeastern states, West Bengal and few others.
