                         New
Delhi: Amid reports of fresh violence, the centre has
decided to deploy ten columns consisting of about 1,000
Army personnel, besides 15 companies of para-military forces
in Vadodara to quickly contain the situation and bring normalcy.
"Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has discussed the
latest situation of the state with Union Home Minister Shivraj
Patil. Following his request for additional para-military
forces, the government has decided to keep nine to ten columns
of Army personnel on the standby in Vadodara and Ahmedabad,"
Home Secretary V K Duggal told reporters after a meeting
to review the situation was undertaken by the Centre. He
said that 13 companies of paramilitary forces including
Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force
(CRPF) have already been deployed in Vadodara and two companies
of paramilitary forces would reach there tomorrow. Duggal
said that situation in the state remained tense but under
control. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who visited
Vadodara today said, "As a precaution we have asked for
additional forces as 24 companies of our state forces are
                      outside for election duty."
                          The
city is tense following violent communal clashes that erupted
on Monday morning as police fired on Muslims protesting
at the demolition of a mausoleum. Vadodara Municipal Corporation
demolished the over 200-year-old Rashidudin Chisti-ni-Dargah
in Fatehpura area of the walled city. The authorities say
that the demolition of the mausoleum is part of a campaign
against illegal constructions. One person was killed on
Tuesday night, increasing the death toll in three days of
rioting to six. Meanwhile, the city continued to simmer
even as fresh reports of stone throwing in the Panigate
area came in. In a separate incident, two factories in the
Sardar Industrial area were set on fire by a mob. Gujarat
DGP PC Pande and state Home Minister Amit Shah are in Vadodara
to take stock of the situation.
