Mother-daughter
murder in Delhi: car found
New
Delhi: In an early breakthrough in the killings of the
lawyer mother-daughter duo, the Delhi Police here on Monday
recovered the car which was reportedly seen on Saturday
night at Siddharth Enclave, where the deceased resided.
According to informed police sources, the police have also
detained the owner of the car Chankya Verma (30), in connection
with the case. Verma, the son of an ex-Indian Air Force
officer, apparently visited the Mahajans house in his Maruti
800 car. He then had gone somewhere with Anuradha on Saturday
night, sources added. The car was found in Noida and Verma
is being interrogated, said sources. The car, in which two
people came, had a Uttar Pradesh number plate and police
is looking for more details.
Meanwhile,
the National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought a report
within three days from the Delhi Police on these gruesome
killings. Speaking to the reporters, the NCW Chairperson,
Girija Vyas said, "The murder of 70-year-old Swarna Mahajan
and her 45-year-old daughter Anuradha Mahajan was shocking.
The incident raised a question over the safety of women
in metropolitan cities."
In
the wake of this twin murder, the Lok Sabha also experienced
an uproar on Monday as Opposition parties demanded more
security for women following a sudden rise in the murder
and rape cases of women and senior citizens in the national
capital. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, spokesman of Bharatiya Janata
Party, hit out at the ruling United Progresses Alliance
in the Parliament for not providing security cover to women.
Sriprakash Jaiswal, the Minister of State for Home said,
"We have directed the Delhi police to take necessary steps
and we have been doing it for a while. As we feel we will
not let this grow." The incident has raised concerns about
the safety of female professionals in the profession and
the Bar Association has also sought special arrangements
for women security.
The
bodies of the mother, Swarna Mahajan, and the daughter,
Anuradha Mahajan, were found when the maid visited their
house at Siddartha Enclave on Sunday morning. Deceased were
both lawyers of the Delhi High Court. Yesterday, according
to the preliminary investigations carried by the police,
it was reported to be a murder case where the assailants
were known to the victims. Since the house was found completely
ransacked, it gave an impression that the murderers were
looking for something. The murder case has been registered.
A series of brutal murders of elderly people and rapes of
women have raised concern among citizens residing in Delhi.
There has been increasing perception that it is turning
out to be unsafe especially for women and senior citizens.
