Rahul Mahajan case: FIR against Apollo

New Delhi: The Delhi police on Thursday registered an FIR against the Apollo Hospital for "misleading the police by providing wrong information" in the Rahul Mahajan drug episode and seized the medical documents of hospital pertaining to his treatment. However, hospital authority on the other hand reiterated its innocence. Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul also said that the hospital could be charged with "tampering and destruction of evidence". There are allegations against hospital doctors of administering drugs to mask the presence of heroin in Rahul's body.

The development comes after the local court today directed the police to register a case against the doctors and the management of the hospital under section 182 of the IPC, for allegedly lying to the public servant and concealing facts. The team of doctors who were treating Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP leader, Pramod Mahajan, at Apollo Hospital were being interrogated for the past three days by police on their alleged action of covering up the incident by suppressing the reports. Dr. Anupam Sibal, Director of Medicine in the hospital had earlier in a press conference declared the negative drug results on Rahul's sample only to be embarrassed later by a private lab report that the same sample contained drugs. Armed with Forensic Science Laboratory report that confirmed Bibek Moitra's death due to drug overdose, the police today told the court that there were many discrepancies in the hospital's report that needed to be investigated. Moitra, aide of Pramod Mahajan who also fell sick after consuming drugs, was declared to be brought dead on Friday morning, by the Apollo Hospital.

Rahul Mahajan collapses outside court

New Delhi: Rahul Mahajan, who was in police custody for two days following his alleged drug abuse episode last week, was on Thursday remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a Patiala House Court. Soon after the order was passed, Mahajan collapsed outside the court. The court directed the police to provide proper treatment to Rahul. Sunil Mittal, the counsel of Rahul had sought bail for his client, but this plea was rejected. Rahul has been sent to Tihar jail. The court also rejected the demand of Delhi Police to extend Rahuls police remand for further interrogation. Earlier in the morning, while returning from the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was taken for medical check-up, Mahajan said that he was innocent.

BJP leader Naqvi visits jailed Rahul

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi visited Rahul Mahajan, the son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, at the at the Tughlak Road Police Station today. Mahajan's two-day police remand ends today and Naqvi had come to enquire about his well-being. Mahajan is likely to be produced in the court later in the day, and it is expected that the Delhi Police will seek an extension of his custody for further interrogation. According to police sources, Rahul was taken for a medical check- up to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital this morning. A court had yesterday permitted Mahajan's counsel to meet his client for an hour in the evening. Meanwhile, the court has issued notice to the Delhi Police on a plea filed by Ganesh, a member of Mahajan's household staff, who was arrested on Tuesday night, which stated that he was illegally detained by the police. Harish and Ganesh, were released on bail on Wednesday after they produced personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each and one surety of a like amount. They were booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act for destruction of evidences. A Delhi Police team is in Mumbai to investigate statements made by Rahul and Sahil Zaroo, the 22-year-old charged with taking drugs to the Mahajan house last Thursday night.
