Raja Bhaiya re-inducted into Uttar Pradesh ministry

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today expanded his ministry with the induction of independent MLA and POTA accused Raghuraj Pratap Singh know as Raja Bhaiya. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhawan around 9:45 a.m. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh, Akshay Pratap Singh, MP and brother of the controversial Kunda MLA, Cabinet Ministers and senior officials were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh defended the re-induction of Raja Bhaiya into the Uttar Pradesh Ministry and said that the party was following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had Ministers like Lalu Prasad Yadav, Shibu Soren and Taslimuddin in his cabinet. Raja Bhaiya was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). He is at present out on bail granted by a Jabalpur court in Madhya Pradesh, where his case was transferred by the Supreme Court. Raja Bhaiyya was jailed along with his father Uday Pratap Singh by the Mayawati government for possession of illegal weapons, including an AK-47 assault rifle. Raja Bhaiyya had resigned from the Cabinet on November 10. He was food and civil supplies minister after his resignation the chief minister had retained the portfolio with himself.

The apex court, while striking down the State government order withdrawing POTA against him, had transferred the case to special POTA court in Jabalpur. After quitting from the ministry, Raja Bhaiyya had surrendered before a POTA court in Kanpur and from there he was shifted to Jabalpur. Later, the Jabalpur High Court had granted him bail with the condition that he should report to Civil Lines Police Station at Jabalpur on last Sunday of every month. Next date for hearing in POTA court is in February. Immediately after his release from MP jail, the well-entrenched Thakur lobby started mounting pressure on the Chief Minister for his rehabilitation.
