E Sreedharan on news-makers' list

Washington: Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) chief E. Sreedharan has been named among "top 25 newsmakers of 2005" by the US's Engineering News-Record (ENR), a renowned publication on the construction industry from the McGraw-Hill stable. Lauding Sreedharan's efforts in the construction and development of metro rail in National capital New Delhi, the magazine said: "This tough Indian manager cut through the country's notorious red tape, employed global best practices and adopted safety steps not common in Indian construction". "At the age of 73, he (Sreedharan) plans to remain on the job for three more years to oversee completion of the next phase, leading toward what will ultimately be a 180-km transportation marvel for India," the weekly added.

The editors of ENR in its latest (January 2-9) issue have chosen the top 25 individuals for their innovations and achievements featured in the magazine in 2005. The chosen "top 25" people will be honoured on April 6 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York. ENR has picked the best of the industry's professionals who have served the interest of the people of their countries and the construction sector. Sreedharan, a Padma Shree awardee, had taken over the helms of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 1997. Prior to that, he had headed one of the toughest projects in the history of the Indian Railways-Konkan Railway. He was also associated with the development of India's first Metro rail project in Kolkata. This is not the first time that the "Metro man" has received international acclamation. He was presented one of the most prestigious civilian awards of the French Government -Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) on November 22 last year. The 'TIME' magazine had also named him an Asian Hero in 2003.
