militant arrested in IISc attack
Bangalore:
Bangalore police arrested a Lashkar-e- Taiba (LeT) terrorist
from Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh in connection with the Indian
Institute of Science (IISc) attack on December 28. The 35-year-old
militant was identified as Abdul Rehman, the South India
operations chief of the Pakistan-based LeT. He was apprehended
on January 1 and presented before a court in Hyderabad on
Monday and has been under judicial custody for 14 days.
While addressing the media, Ajay Kumar Singh, Police Commissioner
of Bangalore said, 'Abdul Rehman LeT links have been confirmed.
The LeT militant had been travelling frequently between
India and Saudi Arabia.' The arrest of Rehman will lead
to a major breakthrough in the IISc attack case, he added.
Asked if the police could establish Rehman's role in the
attack, he said "since he has been arrested in the IISc
attack case, there will be something or the other connection.
We have reasons to arrest him." The terrorists had attacked
the IISc, when an international science seminar was going
on there, killing Puri, former Mathematics Professor at
the Indian Institute of Technology and injuring four others.
After Bangalore, Hubli tightens security
Hubli:
Following the recent shooting at the Indian Institute
of Science in Bangalore, security has been tightened in
the twin cities of Hubli and Dharwad in north Karnataka.
All precautions are being taken to prevent any mishap at
any important central and state government installation
and also at the IT companies in the twin cities. "Hubli-Dharwad
is an important town after Bangalore. It is called the second
capital of Karnataka. Keeping in mind the incidents at the
Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore we have taken adequate
security measures, regarding the vital installations belonging
to the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka
and important private industries," said NR Nadamani, Commissioner
of Police, Hubli. "We are keeping a close watch on anti-social
elements and terrorists if any. So far nothing has been
reported and the city is free from any such incident. I
appeal to the people not to panic. Everything is quite and
cool. We're vigilant and keeping a close watch on the anti-social
elements and criminals and to guard the people against their
nefarious activities," he added. Police have however, beefed
up security across Hubli, as it has many IT companies and
a high concentration of ancillary industries besides important
government offices.
Security
beefed up in Mangalore apprehending terrorist attack
Mangalore: Following
apprehension that Mangalore could be the next target of
terrorist attack, security in the city has been tightened.
Inspector General of Police Suresh Babu said that in view
of the reported threat, security in and around Mangalore
and Udupi districts has been beefed up. "There has been
a lot of speculation indicating that Mangalore is the next
target of the terrorists. But till now, we don't have any
such information, but as a professional body and keeping
in mind the various things, which are happening elsewhere,
we have taken necessary steps," said Babu. Police maintained
that they have not received any threat, and security has
been tightened in all the important areas including the
airport, the port and major industrial establishments. The
IGP said that additional police personnel have been deployed
at several important places and they are ready to take drastic
action against those who try to disrupt peace in the society.
"If anybody try to indulge in such act, we would not hesitate
to take drastic action against such people, because they
have no business to spoil peace in the society," he added.
On December 28, suspected terrorist attacked the Indian
Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore when an international
science seminar was in progress, killing a retired Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi Professor and injuring
six others.
