Students in Bihar protest against kidnappings

Patna: Students here took to the streets on Friday to protest against last month's abduction of Nirmalendu Diwakar, alias Bunty, and demanded adequate security. School students blocked vehicular movement in the city. They held banners and placards and shouted slogans like "We want Bunty back".

They complained that the growing sense of fear has resulted in lack of concentration on their studies. "Today Bunty has been kidnapped, it could be one of us tomorrow. There is a growing sense of uncertainty and fear amongst us. We are unable to concentrate on our studies and are worried about our safety all the time," said Nitin Kumar, a student. Another boy, Ayush blamed the new government for not providing adequate security. "We had lots of hope from the new government in terms of security, but Nitish Kumar (Chief Minister of the State) has not been able to do anything to ensure the safety of school children. We want security. We can't go home without security," he said. Fifteen year-old Diwakar, Bunty to his friends, was abducted in broad daylight from his car on January 17. Bunty, a student of class nine, was kidnapped when he was leaving for school with his driver, when kidnappers smashed the window of the car, pulling out the driver and speeding away to an unknown destination with the child. Police say they were trying hard to track the abductors but the children were not satisfied. After a new government took over in November last year, over 60 kidnappings have been reported forcing the State High Court to order a report from the Nitish Kumar government by February 14. Lawyers, doctors and wealthy businessmen have been the prime target of extortionists in the State and hundreds have over the years migrated to safer places or sent their children to boarding schools.
