Nepal King's offer finds no takers
Kathmandu:
More than twenty hours after Nepal King Gyanendra announced
to hand over the executive power to the opposition Seven-Party
Alliance (SPA), his offer has found no takers not only among
the political parties but also among the general people who
have termed it as too little and too late. Saturday morning
witnessed hectic meetings among the different party leaders
to chalk out a the course of its next level of protests as
the political parties like Communist Party of Nepal- UML and
Nepali Congress have already publicly rejected the King's
offer and have vowed to continue the protests. General Secretary
of CPN-UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal said: "We will not accept ...
We will continue the protests," to a group of protestors in
Kathmandu. Nepali Congress leader and former Prime Minister,
Girija Prasad Koirala, today said that the offer has no meaning
to them and that they would continue their protests since
the King has not yet accepted our demands.
Meanwhile,
the seven-party alliance, which is spearheading the pro-democracy
movement, has rejected the King's offer of transferring executive
power to the people and vowed to continue their agitation.
"The King's proclamation has failed to address the objective
and agenda of the people's movement. It has devalued people's
sentiments," a statement issued after the alliance meeting
said. The meeting was attended by Nepali Congress President
Koirala, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress (Democratic)
President Deba, Jan Morcha Nepal Chairman Amik Sherchan, Nepal
Workers and Peasants Party Chairman Narayanman Bijukchhe,
Nepal Sadbhavana Party (A) Vice President Bharat Vimal Yadav
and United Left Front leader Bishnu Bahadur Manandhar. The
opposition SPA has been demanding of constituting a new Constituent
Assembly that would frame a new Constitution for the Himalayan
Kingdom. Meanwhile, thousands of protestors have again come
out on the streets of the capital today and shouted slogans
against the King. Nepal's Royal Government today freed two
senior leaders of CPN, Jhala Nath Khanal and Bamdev Gautam,
who were taken into custody on Friday from the Kathmandu airport
soon after they returned from New Delhi.
