clash: toll rises to five
Aligarh:
The Uttar Pradesh Government today transferred the District
Magistrate (DM) and the Senior Superintendent of Police
(SSP) of Aligarh in the wake of yesterday's clash between
the two communities. Meanwhile, the death toll increased
to five with the recovery of one more body today. Earlier,
two top district officials were suspended for alleged negligence
during yesterday's communal violence. The city Superintendent
of Police, S K Verma and city Additional District Magistrate
(ADM), Satya Bhan, were placed under suspension for being
lax. As per reports, a fresh incident of brick-batting was
reported this morning from Bhujpura area, compelling the
authority to continue the curfew. Jawans of Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Provincial
Armed Constabulary (PAC) along with the civil police were
patrolling the streets. Tight security arrangements have
been made in the wake of the Friday prayers. According to
the top police and civil officials who were monitoring the
situation here said that the situation was 'under control'.
The violent incident took place in Dahiwali Gali area yesterday
afternoon, over a dispute pertaining to decoration at a
makeshift temple for Ram Navmi. Communal tension first sparked
off Wednesday night, resulting in stone pelting, firing
and destruction of public property in the area. The Government
had announced an ex gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the
kin of the deceased and financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh
and Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the clashes. Meanwhile,
the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sriprakash Jaiswal,
said on Friday that he has ordered for a judicial probe
into the communal riots in Aligarh, which claimed six lives.
