Shun violence, PM asks Assamese youth

Tezpur (Asom): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today urged Assamese youth to shun violence so that rapid development is instilled in the state and the entire north-east. Addressing a rally in the historic town of Tezpur situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra, Dr. Singh said: "Armed struggle should be avoided by the misguided youths for all round development of the region". Terming the insurgents as "misguided youths", who have taken up violence, Dr. Singh said:"if such armed struggle continues in the state, the entire North-East region gets affected". "They (insurgents) should give up violence and return to the mainstream", Dr. Singh said. Dr. Singh praised Congress President Sonia Gandhi and said that under her leadership the party has been able to bring about progress and development in Asom. Hailing the developmental works carried under the Bharat Nirman Yojna, Dr. Singh said that the implementation of the programme is yielding results adding that it would help in eradicating poverty and unemployment, thereby bridging the urban and rural divide. Reiterating the good work done under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan programme, the Prime Minister said that the state Government with the support from Centre is particularly focussing on the education and health of women and children.

Prime Minister, who is on a two-day whirlwind tour of Asom to drum up support for Congress candidates ahead of the Assembly polls will also address a rally in the Karbi Anglong district, later in the evening. Anglong region witnessed a bloody ethnic riot recently that claimed more than 100 lives, later in the evening. Polls in these regions are scheduled to be held on April 10. On Saturday, Dr. Singh had ruled out any understanding with the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) unless and until they abandoned their demand for sovereignty. He said that the Centre would hold talks with them only under the framework of the Constitution.
