Suspected LeT militant gunned down in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The police in Ahmedabad said on Saturday that they had gunned down a suspected rebel of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit, which New Delhi claims to be connected with the 29/10 serial blast. The anti-terrorist squad of Ahmedabad and Rajasthan Police together carried out the operation based on specific intelligence reports, killing him at 5:20 in the morning today. Key supporter of Pakistan's Karachi based underworld don Sharif Khan, Sorrabuddin was in Ahmedabad to assassinate a prominent politician, police said. "According to reports of our intelligence agencies, Sorrabuddin was in Ahmedabad to assassinate some high-profile politician of Gujarat. According to the latest evidence, he travelled from Surat by train and reached Ahmedabad around 8-8:30 p.m. yesterday and was targeted early in the morning." Police recovered sophisticated weapons and ammunition from the killed militant. Lashkar, outlawed in 2002 after being blamed for a bloody attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001, has earlier denied it was involved in the New Delhi blasts that left 66 people killed and some 200 wounded. LeT is among the dozen militant outfits fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.
