ISO 9002 Award

NEW DELHI: The United Registrar of Systems Ltd, UK, has awarded ISO 9002 to  Government of India's Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd in recognition of its  quality standards.

The Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Pawan Hans, Maj Gen A Natarajan, said  the award was a confirmation of, among other things, the quality policy  followed by the company with respect to its overhaul facilities and safety  standards.

Haj Terminal At IGIA Opens

NEW DELHI: The Haj terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in  New Delhi has been declared open from January 27. Of the 72,000 Haj pilgrims  being flown out, 26,000 are from Delhi airport.

The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Sharad Yadav, who opened the 
terminal, said it has been built to ease the pressure on the international 
terminal.

Jet Airways Goes In For
Selective Fare Hike

NEW DELHI: India's premier private airlines operator, Jet Airways, had 
announced recently a 10 per hike in Indian rupee fares, maintaining the 
fares in dollar at the prevailing level.

The inland air travel tax also went up proportionately. Though the passenger  service fee of Rs 125 remained unchanged, the point-to-point, student,  senior citizen, military and other special fares also were revised  proportionately.

The fare hike comes in the wake of the rise in the rates of aviation turbine  fuel by about Rs 4.

Stealing Liquor

MUMBAI: Despite the fact that Air India employees take home a heavy pay  packet, seven of them were caught pilfering liquor from an aircraft at the  Bangkok airport recently.

The seven cabin crew had stolen 17 bottles of champagne and wine and were  caught red-handed during a surprise check. The stolen liquor was meant for  the passengers.


Rats In Air India's Cupboard

NEW DELHI: A rat trapped in the cockpit held up an Air India flight at the  Indira Gandhi International Airport recently, it has come to light. The rat  had destroyed electrical wires, affecting the proper functioning of various  segments. The plane was carrying around 200 passengers. It left for its  destination, Tokyo, after two days with the passengers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More flights will take off from Thiruvananthapuram international airport from August 15. Talks are being held with other countries in this regard, according to sources in the civil aviation  ministry.Work on the new international terminal will also be started soon, it is learnt.

With improvements in flight facilities from here, the tourist arrivals in 
the state have recorded a remarkable increase.

Licences Suspended  

NEW DELHI: The flying licences of two pilots of Jet Airways have been 
suspended for "heavy landing'' of a Boeing at Mangalore airport recently.

The safety of the 122 passengers on board was thrown to the winds, and the  plane suffered damages in the "heavy landing''' carried out by the  co-pilot. According to the inquiry report of the Director-General of Civil  Aviation, the pilot should not have delegated the landing job to the 
co-pilot in view of the risk involved in manoeuvring through the surrounding  hills.

The tyres had also got deflated on landing and the runway was blocked, 
leading to the closure of the airport for some time.

Mumbai Airport Being
Modernised
 

MUMBAI: The Government is implementing a Rs 500-cr modernization programme   at the Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport.

According to Mr Sharad Yadav, Civil Aviation Minister, the runways at 
Ahmedabad, Raipur, Bhopal, Rajkot and Porbandar airports are also being  extended.

With a view to attracting tourists, the ministry is also planning circuit 
routes for Bodh Gaya, Nalanda and Sarnath.
