Sikhs celebrate New Year

Amritsar: Sikh devotees visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar to celebrate the beginning of the Sikh New Year on March 14. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which manages the religious affairs of the Sikhs, has adopted the Nanakshahi calendar to determine the dates for important Sikh events. Pal Singh Purewal designed the Nanakhahi calendar to replace the Hindu calendar. It has been in use since 1998.
