battling terrorists in
Mumbai hotels: Toll near 150
Mumbai,
Nov 28: The sprawling, luxury Taj hotel in Mumbai
was on fire following
blasts and firing by the terrorists who struck the Taj
and Trident Oberoi hotels, Jews' Nariman House and the
Shivaji
railway station on
Wednesday
night and killed about 150 people, including several foreigners.
Hundreds of people were trapped in the hotels and the
Jewish heritage centre through Thursday and Friday. Fourteen
policemen, a National Security Guards commando, eight
foreigners and several terrorists were among those killed.
The army and commando operation launched Thursday morning,
in which helicopters were also put to use, was not over
till late Friday night as some of those trapped were yet
to be rescued from Taj hotel.
Indian
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday visited the
victims of the terrorist attacks undergoing treatment
in Mumbai hospitals. The rime Minister was accompanied
by Congress president and chairperson of the United
Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister
Shivraj Patil. The Maharashtra government has announced
a compensation of 500,000 rupees for the families
of the 14 police personnel killed in the gun battle
with the militants.
