Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations begin
Mumbai/Pune/Chennai: Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated all over the country. It is one of the greatest of festivals in western Maharashtra, especially. In Mumbai, thousands of people waited all night last night to take part in the aarti at the Siddhivinayak temple in Dadar. The festival, which falls on the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, beginning on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period), is observed for one, two, five, seven or even ten days, ending with Ananta Chaturdashi on the final day marked by the immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesha into a well, pond, lake, river or sea.
The 10-day long Ganesh Chaturthi began on Sunday. Artisans were seen giving final touches to the idols in western Pune. In order to avoid environmental problems, idols are now mostly made of degradable substances. Unlike other deities where any changes shown in its image could be considered sacrilegious, Ganesh can be depicted in any style. In Tamil Nadu one can see idol-makers have come up with new postures. Idol collectors always want new figures. The demand for sweets offered to Lord Ganesha, known as modaks in Maharashtra, have gone up. It is a favourite of Ganesha. There are modaks of various varieties. Security
has been tightened because of fear of terrorism after the train blasts
in Mumbai. Thousands of people are expected to converge on the city. The
idols will be arranged in make-shift tents. There will be close circuit
cameras and security guards with metal detectors apart from the police.
