Radha Ashtami celebrated in Vrindavan

Vrindavan: The birthday of Goddess Radha, Radha Ashtami, was celebrated here with great fervour. Thousands of devotees flocked to the temples in this holy city of Vrindavan to participate in the grand celebrations on Thursday. Celebrated 15 days after Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, the birthday of Radha is locally known as Radha Ashtami. "The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated in Mathura and Nandgaon in a grand way. But in the rest of Brij, Goddess Radha is considered superior to Lord Krishna. In Vrindavan, birthday of the Goddess is celebrated in a grand way," said Acharya Rajendra Goswami, a priest. The festival was marked with singing, dancing and spraying of saffron milk mixed with curd at each other. "We have been coming here for last 25 years. The celebration here is much more grand than the celebrations anywhere in the world," said Snehlata Aggarwal, a devotee, who came from Kolkata. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna is the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver and one of the trinities of the Hindu pantheon. The tales of Krishna-Radha love are depicted in Indian architecture and paintings; and their relationship is often interpreted as the quest for union with the divine.
