Migratory birds flock to Harike sanctuary
Amritsar: A large number of migratory birds are thronging Harike bird sanctuary in Amritsar, with extreme cold climate enveloping the central Asian countries. The sanctuary is a large wetland created on the river Sutlej and is being developed into a tourist destination. The shallow water body attracts large numbers of wintering waterfowl and is home to many birds, including several rare species. Sanctuary officials say they have employed trained tourist guides to give detailed information to the tourists about the birds.
"We have employed guides who give
the tourists a tour of the sanctuary on a boat and give them all information
about the birds. What they eat, how they stay, their movement, sleeping
habits. We tell people all about the birds," said Karamchand, a wildlife
warden. "There are thousands of birds here and I have come here as a
photographer and have found a good subject. I want to tell the world
about the huge variety of birds her," said Deepak, a tourist.
