Kite festival under way

Ahmedabad: It's time for celebrations for the kite flyers all around the world as the international kite festival got underway in Ahmedabad today (January 11). As many as 54 award winners from across the globe are participating in the festival. A number of pariticipants had laboured hard in order to carve out beautiful designs in their kites and their preparations began well before the months of winter. The kites flown are of variant sizes, in vibrant colours and almost unimaginable and beautiful designs with a variety of themes. Hordes of these kite flyers are regular pariticpants at the kite festivals all around the world and being in Ahmedabad for such an occasion makes them more than thrilled.

"There's a big difference between kite festival in Europe and here in Asia. In Asia, kites are a part of the tradition, while in Europe kites are a kind of game or meant only for kids. There are more enthusiasts here than in Europe," said Ralf Dietrich, a participant from Denmark. "It takes many hours to make a kite and usually we do it during winters and we bring the kites to these festivals. It's very nice to be in kite festivals. We meet our friends and also meet different kinds of people. It's really nice to be here," said Brigit Navne, also from Denmark. The festival concludes on January 14. The event will coincide with the popular kite-flying festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sakranti. It also coincides with the second "Vibrant Gujarat: Global Investors' Summit - 2005".
