Khaana Khazaana Dilli Ka

NEW DELHI: For the residents of the Capital, it is a brush with history as they savour age-old delicacies of this ancient city.

A three-day food festival featuring culinary delights of the ancient city of Delhi got under way at Dilli Haat on June 22. Organised by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the festival, `Dilli Ka Khaana' (Food of Delhi) brought chefs from the city's Old Delhi area who have shops running through generations.

The chefs were happy with the response on the very first day of the festival. "We will get publicity and new contacts", said Abdul Sattar, whose shop in Chandni Chowk is famous for its chicken meat preparations. The 200-year old markets of Chandni Chowk were the main commercial hub of Delhi during the Mughal rule. Most of the shop-owners there now have been in the business for several generations.

Apart from reviving the old glory and legacy of the area, the festival displayed recent food inventions too. Crisp snack preparations or the 'chaat' and spicy deep-fried potatoes have been added to tickle the palate of urbanites. And there were ice candies too to beat the summer. Ice candy balls with colours sprinkled over were a rage with visitors from outside Delhi.

The venue of the festival, Dilli Haat, is an exclusive shopping and food plaza owned by the Delhi Tourism Department. The shopping complex has stalls of handicrafts and restaurants from India's diverse 25-odd states.
