Trawler Ban to Help Fish-Breeding

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fishing trawlers have drawn anchors along the

Kerala coast as a customary 45-day ban began on June 15. The ban on the engine-propelled trawlers during the monsoon in June-July has been in practice since 1989 as a step to preserve the sea wealth in view of this being the breeding period.

At Vizhinjam, a fishing village close to the city, huge trawlers are anchored along the coast. Smaller engine boats and rowing boats, widely used by the villagers, are exempt from the ban as their fishing nets have larger gaps which allow the small fish to escape.

The trawlers adversely affect the sea population in a variety of ways. During the monsoon, several species of fish go deep into the sea for breeding. And deep-sea fishing by trawlers disturbs them. Moreover, the trawlers run on kerosene which asphyxiates the small fish.
